We are witnessing the rise of the new market – market of wearable electronics that is estimated by experts to reach $100-300 billion in next 5 years. A wide variety of smart wristbands, rings, helmets, medallions, headphones, watches, sensors and other gadgets are complimenting the ubiquitous smartphones and tablets that are an integral part of our today’s life. There is no doubt that habitual computers would transform in the nearest future: we are living the phase transition period of personal electronics going from “carried” to “wearable” on human body.
In 2012 NeckTec company performed a study of the mobility of electronic devices and formulated the most likely form-factor of computers of tomorrow at the junction of technical requirements, anatomy, ergonomics and historical traditions. Thus the concept of electronic necklace was born (hidden wear under clothes for men, decorative for women). Electronic necklace, E-lace, smart collar, e-Necklace, smart necklace,.. – even the name of the said category of wearables isn’t established yet, however more and more products of startup companies and big names OEMs are made to be worn on the neck.


Over the last years we have developed the base for a wearable computer – a device that would include most required daily functionality (smartphone, audio player, blutooth headset, file storage, fitness tracker, medical sensors, AVR glasses,..), and able to interact by wireless connections with external devices and systems (screens, projectors, computers, smartphones, smart home systems, access systems,..). We made a thorough study of the necklace form-factor as a wearable computer, we developed and patented (ссылка на общую картинку всех патентов) a number of solutions that allowed creating the optimum configuration of blocks and their sizes, shapes and buttons locations, earphones wire output points and wire ordering system, wire winding mechanism and storage system for wires and earbuds, and a special microphone array with highly effective noise reduction.

The NeckTec electronic necklace was designed to become the base for creation of wearable computers and devices with different functionality for constant wear

It is assumed that minimal configuration (MVP) of the NeckTec electronic necklace would include:
  • Bluetooth headset function for mobile phone/smartphone;
  • Ordering and storage systems for earbuds and their wires;
  • Microphone array with special software for high efficiency noise reduction;
  • Powerful battery pack;
  • Audio player with amplifier;
  • High-volume memory for constant off-line access to needed files;
  • Wireless module for interaction with external devices.
Also there is enough space left in the necklace for additional hardware depending on final application of the device allowing to achieve:
  • Built-in smartphone;
  • Wearable sensors of health monitoring or other medical appliances;
  • Monitoring of needed environmental parameters;
  • Communication with external electronic devices and access & registration systems, location control and others;
  • Electronic touristic guide;
  • Automated language translator with voice control;
  • Advanced gaming video processor and AVR glasses socket;
  • Dual channel communication device with separate channel for both ears;
  • Any other application for general or specialized use.


Necklace architecture and its location on human body together give a number of significant advantages comparing to all known types of wearable gadgets:
  • Convenient placement in proximity of all communication senses lets realize all needed functions of communicators while leaving hands free;
  • Huge size (comparing to most wearables) of necklace’s blocks placed on chest allows to accommodate powerful processors for major hardware and additional interchangeable elements under individual needs of application/user;
  • Sufficient space for large battery pack corresponding to device requirements and connectable accessories;
  • Lite earbuds designed by our team for continuous comfortable wear are almost unnoticeable while having clear and powerful sound, have no loose wires that are easily kept in dorsal storage pocket when not in use;
  • Lite AVR glasses with practical connection on the dorsal part of neck would look much more attractive due to battery and processor transfer in the necklace, thus glasses become screen-only device;
  • External screen as visual interface and virtual keyboard becomes simple and cheap, its crash, loss or theft are no longer significant – data and precious hardware stays on the neck;
  • Any other advantages resulting from the size and positioning of the necklace.
  • Wire winding and storage blocks eliminate tangling or damaging of wires during use and manipulations with the necklace;
  • Possibility to store substantial data volume on the necklace’s internal memory would allow to have all necessary files handy even when off-line and use them on any near-by device by wireless connections;
Presently the NeckTec necklace exists in several working prototypes, works on external design are underway and we plan to launch the product on mass market as continuous wear Bluetooth headset with a number of extra functions.
